What Does Orthodontic Treatment Involve?

Orthodontics refers to treatments that address various bite and teeth alignment issues in children and adults. Whether you have crooked teeth, crowding or teeth with gaps between them, orthodontic interventions can help. Orthodontic treatments use gradual force over time to push teeth into their optimal alignment.

Treatment length varies depending on your particular needs, the extent of your misalignment issues, and whether you're getting conventional or Invisalign braces. The payoff is a straighter smile that will make your daily oral hygiene more effective, minimizing the chance of developing cavities and gum disease while improving your smile aesthetic.

Our Orthodontic Process & Offerings for Adults

During your initial consultation, we'll perform x-rays and create highly detailed digital impressions of your teeth with our iTero® intraoral scanner or with dental putty. Using these tools, we'll get a precise picture of your entire bite, which serves as a blueprint for creating your orthodontic treatment plan.

We provide traditional or clear aligner braces and can work with you to come to the correct decision for your particular situation. For instance, we recommend Invisalign clear aligners for patients who prefer a discreet straightening option, or may be juggling busy schedules. Feel free to address any questions about the process during your consultation with our friendly orthodontist.

Phase I & Phase II Orthodontics for Kids

We offer Phase I and II treatments, meaning your child will have a consistent orthodontic experience over the years. Phase I often starts between the ages of 6-10 and focuses on addressing early issues, which can reduce the severity of alignment problems later on. Phase I might involve using appliances like expanders or space maintainers to promote proper growth and development. Phase II generally begins once most permanent teeth have erupted, usually from the ages of 11-15. This second phase involves more comprehensive treatment to align teeth, forming a comfortable bite. Both Phase I and II may use conventional metal bracket braces.

Do I Need Orthodontic Treatment?

Some signs you could benefit from orthodontic treatments are clear, like visibly crooked or gapped teeth. However, there are other issues orthodontics can solve that might not be as obvious, like subtle misaligned bite relationships that cause jaw pain. Some of the issues orthodontics are great for treating include:

  • Crooked Teeth
  • Crowded or Overlapping Teeth
  • Overbite & Underbites
  • Crossbites
  • Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
  • A Painful Bite
  • Spaces Between Teeth

Family Orthodontics FAQs

Choosing a practice capable of providing excellent orthodontic services is a significant choice. That's why at Friedl Dentistry, we're here to answer your questions and address your concerns promptly. Here are some frequently asked questions we receive.

Do I have to change my diet with Invisalign treatment?

Invisalign clear aligners are removable, so you don't have to change your diet. You can simply remove your invisible braces when you eat or drink. Once you finish your meal, you simply brush your teeth and put your aligners back on.

Most patients don't describe traditional or Invisalign braces as painful. The only discomfort you might feel is tenderness or soreness when the archwire is adjusted or you start wearing a new aligner tray. This sensation should go away in a day or two.

You may find it a bit challenging to perform effective oral hygiene while wearing traditional braces. If you find cleaning food particles trapped under the archwire difficult, there are various helpful tools, such as a "Christmas tree" brush and floss threaders, designed to make hygiene for your teeth and braces easier.
